On opening night, I got my answer: Grease was not the word at the Academy of Music Tuesday night. Instead, the prime attraction was a bit-part “star”— the slimy “American Idol” crooner Taylor Hicks.
After the show, Hicks pulled the ultimate dick move on his cast mates by performing a song from his new album. In one fell swoop, he eradicated the memories of the musical to which the cast had all contributed, and essentially made the evening all about his talentless self.
Like his performance in American Idol, the consummate wedding singer again ruins something that theatergoers enjoy.

You sound awfully bitter. What's your deal?
'Grease' is in Philly for only 3 weeks and yet this is the *third* time that you have used your position at this blog to trash Taylor Hicks. (The first time was on July 6 before you had even seen him, before the show even opened - and at that time you even included a link to some kind of hate blog! Do you lurk there to find info for your 'reviews' about entertainers?) Then last week I read your supposed "review" that oozed vitriol towards Taylor Hicks – after I had just seen this fun show on opening night! Guess what? The audience loved Taylor Hicks. He brought down the roof! At the very least, this likable guy is an excellent performer and audiences across the country have been loving his role as Teen Angel. I don't know what your agenda is, but I hardly think that you should be using this "Broadway" blog to be spewing this nastiness that obviously stems from some sort of personal feelings. Your remarks verge on slander and don’t even reach the lower rung of professionalism. I echo the previous commenter - "What's your deal?" Also - to anyone interested - I have no problem recommending this show. Taylor Hicks is worth the price of admission!
I saw Grease in Chicago and the audience loved Taylor. I fully suspect he is in the show because he is making money for the producers of the show and that means he is helping keep the cast employed. So I really wondering what your problem is??????
If you would have actually done some research, you'd see that Taylor has found a way to promote his newest CD within the play.
It's part of his contract.
Dick.
I'm so over people with no lives who have nothing better to do than trash Taylor Hicks. Mr. Hicks has come up with a clever way to promote his new album. Why are you so jealous? Only way you can get people to read your dick blog is by putting 'Taylor Hicks' in the title. Pathetic.
Rutter – I’m back with a few more thoughts. It would be a shame if even one person here in Philadelphia were influenced by your personal bias, negativity and failure as a journalist. I think you should be fired actually. Unfortunately I think “corrupt and contented" will prevail. Pity! It occurred to me that since you linked to the blog ‘VoteForTheWorst,” you are likely a closet Idol fan? And could it be that your guy – or gal - didn’t win? Just a thought I had.
Taylor Hicks did this show in the Big Apple last summer – in New York City. And Broadway loved him. The uniqueness of Taylor’s interpretation of the Teen Angel - complete with harmonica and blue sequined suit - delighted audiences on Broadway and there has been similar audience response across the country. Here's a better link than what you provided - this one to BroadwayWorld.com - where interested readers will find an overview of this production and of Mr. Hicks. I just did some research and I noticed that Atlanta has actually added a few more days to the ‘Grease’ run there in August because of the popularity of this show.

p.s. In my previous comment I mistakenly said that 'Grease' is in Philly for 3 weeks. It is here for 2 weeks only and will end this Sunday - when they will be out of here - like "greased lightening."
Can't wait for GREASE to come to the New Orleans area. I would love to see Taylor as Teen Angel. Any post-show performance by Taylor would be lagniappe. BTW, if Taylor wasn't performing in GREASE, I wouldn't be there. He is the only reason for going to the show. I'm sure the cast and crew know that.
FYI (and all im gunna say is) Taylor & Grease made a deal when his album was released that he'd sing the current single fron his The Distance album. Also he only sings the song 20 mins after the show (im sure he does tha to give himslef time to change & those that aren't fans of his time to leave so his fans that came to seehim can hear the song). Now that Seven Mile break down is out i was told today hes no longer singing whats Right is Right.
Taylor Hicks has a natural talet & he's being cut down by 1 person or another & I hate it. I dont read these rag blogs that cut him down but i had to say something to this.
Earlier this week Taylor did the something for a fellow fan that has Forever etched himslef in the herts of many fans. U dont deserve to know & im not telling you.
why should I listen to a reviewer who does not have one kind word about Taylor Hicks You must have a personal grudge against him. Maybe if you were not such a negative person you would have enjoyed Taylor's performance as everyone sane did. Taylor has a wonderful talent and has never said anyhthing mean about anyone and everyone is always quick to judge every thing he does. Taylor was the best part of the show and the whole show was fantastic!! not that you would know, you are just a critic and you guys have your head up your "butts" most of the time. Hey if you took your head out of your "Butt" the show would have sounded better and you would have enjoyed it!!
I'm sorry you did not enjoy Taylor's performance. However the language you chose to use was inappropriate. Taylor has fans of all ages, and your level of ignorance amazes me. So you were not happy with the added feature, but all those ticket holders who brought revenue to the city of Philly, were very happy. I suggest the next time you do a review, think of your grandmother, children, sister, or spouse and choose your words appropriately. FYI, Taylor Hicks has a heart of gold, and is a man who goes the distance to give us fans that extra something. He IS a gentleman and a kind hearted soul. In case you had not heard, he puts smiles in peoples hearts.....
Hope you have a non bitter, positive day today..

Well, did you have any answer for any of these commentors?
In New York, Broadway World, which seemed to be quite fond of Hicks, said that Hicks had brought an extra $150,000 a week to the show. That why hes on tour with them, thats why its okay for him to do a song on his own, and the crowds have been loving it. You sir, would not recognize talent if it bit you in the butt.
Jim Rutter will pleased my comments, that being this production was a rip off. My wife and I attended this week-end in Toronto. Anxiously waiting to see Taylor Hicks as a leading roll, act 1 ended and no Taylor Hicks. He appears for Teen Angel half way through the last act...one song. You pay big bucks for that. OK there was a show that went on, in fairness to the singers and dancers they were okay, I think the star should of been the DJ who got things rolling with his performance. After the cast took their bows, Taylor sang a song from his new CD..didn't like it. Sorry Taylor , won't buy your CD's or go to see you perform again. Now if Adam Lambert is doing Grease maybe I'll go and see that.
Taylor Hicks adds something special to his role. He's perfectly cast! It makes sense to have him on the tour.
